George Jones Scholarship

Vine Ingle Little League is pleased to offer the George Jones Scholarship as a way to honor the memory of the man who meant so much to the League for so long.  The scholarship will be presented during the first round of the Major League Tournament in May. It will be awarded to a high school senior who played baseball as a twelve year old at Vine Ingle Little League. The amount of the scholarship is $2000 and may be used at any college or university.  Interested persons should return a completed application form by April 30th to the address on the application.  The completed application must include an academic transcript and a one to two page essay on what Vine Ingle meant to the applicant.

After Freedom Park softball joined Vine Ingle Little League, the George Jones Scholarship Award committee decided it was appropriate to include a graduating female softball player who played at Freedom Park softball at least till her 12 year old season. This decision was made because Mr. Jones actually was the founder of softball at Freedom Park.  2019 marked the first year that the George Jones Scholarship award was given to both a male and female winner.

Mr. Jones did it all for the League.  He started as a coach in 1958 and served as a Board member, President, and, at different times, was in charge of uniforms and equipment, umpires, and running the Instructional Leagues, among other things.  His dedication to the League and his influence on it are legendary.  This scholarship was set up in 1999 to honor him and to assure that participants in the League for years to come will know about the contributions of this incredible man who passed away in March 2004.

Anyone interested in making a tax-deductible contribution to the George Jones Scholarship Fund should contact Jimmy Braswell at the address or telephone number on the application.
